To begin with are the stories of cowboy tradesmen true? Unfortunately most of the stories are true, and there seem to be a lot of so called tradesmen out there that are just after a quick buck and are wiling to rip people off to get it.

I sometimes wonder with the amount of work and effort these characters put in to ripping people off would it not make more sense (not to mention a more sustainable business plan) just do a decent job in the first place?.

Surely word must get around about these dodgy tradesmen, who they are and where they operate that they must run out of people to con?.

But it does go on, only recently we have completed a job repairing a customers valley roof in Norfolk, when we told our customers this required doing they where shocked as only a year before they had paid someone to do the exact same job, but as we showed the homeowners the roof hadn’t been touched for years! And now this unfortunate couple where in the position of having to pay for the job to be done again, this time properly! I wish I could say this was an isolated incident but we come across this kind of thing on a much too regular basis.

The steps below will help you to find the right tradesmen to work on your house.

• Firstly all companies should have an internet presence (especially if they intend to or have been around for a while) so do a search for their name and see what comes up.

• Also ask for some previous customers that you can contact – be careful that you don’t get fobbed off with their friend or brothers phone number always get an address!

• Go to the companies house website there you can get all sorts of information about the business (assuming they are a limited company) such as trading address and date of formation etc (you can even see their last accounts if you pay a small fee).

• Ask them for references from previous employers. A decent tradesman should have several and also find out how and where they where trained ie did they attend college or do some from of apprenticeship.

• Find out if they belong to any trades bodies or professional organizations.

You should always get 3 different quotes and remember the cheapest isn’t always the best! but even if you are not getting 3 quotes be sure to tell the contractor you are – this will keep them on their toes regarding pricing
